The latest issue of Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority’s Nuclear Safety Bulletin presenting a number of interesting articles is now available. The new issue covers the 2024 annual safety performance assessment of nuclear facilities, changes in legislation related to the use of nuclear energy and its supervision, the nuclear emergency preparedness, the shutdown of a main circulation pump at Paks NPP, and the cracks in the wall of the working pit of Unit 5 area and the detachment of wall corners.
On 24 June 2025, Andrea Beatrix Kádár, President of the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority (ENRRA) with the aim of deepening bilateral professional relations. The MoU covers the exchange of information and professional experience between the two authorities, in areas such as nuclear power plant oversight, emergency preparedness, radioactive waste management, research reactor oversight and safety culture.
On 19 June 2025, the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority (HAEA) authorised the Paks II Nuclear Power Plant Ltd (Paks 2) to continue the construction activity prohibited by the decision issued under P2-HA00759. The reason for the earlier prohibition, which was imposed in order to ensure the stability of the retaining walls of the working pit and to eliminate the life-threatening condition, was that on 30 January 2025, a localized collapse of a part of the improved soil wall and the detachment of the soil improvement block occurred on the southern wall section of the working pit of Unit 5.
The annual meeting of the Czech, Hungarian, Slovak and Slovenian nuclear authorities took place in Portoroz, Slovenia, on 13-14 May 2025, with the participation of delegations from the Finnish and Polish partner authorities. In 2003 the four authorities with similar-sized nuclear programmes decided to institutionalise their meetings to regularly share regulatory oversight experiences and exchange views on key international and national issues related to the use of nuclear energy. The Hungarian delegation was led by Andrea Beatrix Kádár, President of the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority.
The training of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors took place in Hungary between 5-9 May 2025, organized by the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority (HAEA). Hungary is an active supporter of the IAEA nuclear safeguards system in three main areas: support for IAEA training activities, development of new equipment and technologies as well as testing of new instruments and equipment.
